Green footprints on the Orange Stage

Technological solutions mixed with hard rock. Roskilde Festival is a trend-setter, also when it comes to the environment.

Charge your cell phone with power from your own legs, take a bath in solar heated water and use solar-cooled ice. A sustainable existence will possible for the modern festival visitor; of this Roskilde Festival's Climate Project "Green footsteps on tour" was certain.

A whole area of the festival site by the name 'Community Climate' was dedicated to the climate, and some 4,000 festival guests had gotten access to a special climate camp by assuring three out of ten 'green footprints', which were climate-friendly rules for living such as making organic food and participate in waste separation.

Our little climate zone is a sort of rehearsal of next year when the climate becomes the overriding theme for the whole festival,
says Nikolaj Rasmussen from the information centre of Roskilde Festival which displayed the latest craze of the festival: free of charging of mobile phones after pedalling for 15 minutes.

With seven major music scenes, over 180 bands and more than 65,000 paying guests, Roskilde Festival is one of the largest in Europe, surpassed only by Glastonbury in England. The size of the festival means that it can make a considerable difference when it comes to the attitudes of suppliers of electronic equipment.

This was the second time Roskilde demanded LED lights, which saves up to 40 percent of energy consumption, for their stages.
First we had to look for someone other than the usual supplier, but suddenly the original one changed course and said they agreed to provide LED lighting,
explains Nicholas Rasmussen.
